Presented by the Jazz Studies Program at Bakersfield College, the annual Panorama Creative Music Summit is a showcase for new and original music by visiting artists, local performers, and BC faculty, students, and alumni. This year’s summit features legendary trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and educator WADADA LEO SMITH.
Recognized worldwide for his symbolic image-based musical language called Ankhrasmation and his deep exploration of spiritual harmony and social issues through music, Smith has been at the forefront of innovation in jazz and creative music since the 1960s. He is a recipient of the Doris Duke Artist Award, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Music, and has been named composer, trumpeter, and artist of the year in DownBeat, among many other honors.
Wadada Leo Smith will work with students in BC’s Jazz Studies program from September 15-17 with two free public events in the Simonsen Performing Arts Center Indoor Theater: an artist talk on Monday, September 15 at 1pm, and a concert with BC student and faculty ensembles on Wednesday, September 17 at 7pm.
