Step off the beaten path and into one of Catalina Island’s most exclusive hiking experiences. This guided journey through Ben Weston Canyon Trail takes you toward a remote, wild beach while uncovering the conservation stories that make this place unlike anywhere else on Earth.
About the Hike
From the Trailhead, it’s a 1.2-mile trek to the beach with gentle creek crossings, a 190-foot elevation gain and sweeping views along the way. Some portions offer shade, but much of the trail is sun-exposed, so bring sun protection. The round trip takes about 1.5 hours. There are no restrooms or water available until you return to the Trailhead.
Wildlife & Conservation
Keep your eyes open for Catalina’s rare and remarkable wildlife like the Island Fox, Catalina Quail, Ground Squirrel, and Catalina Island Shrew. While sightings aren’t guaranteed, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the science and care that goes into protecting these species and the fragile habitats they call home.

Departure & Return Details
This exclusive excursion begins at the Trailhead Visitor Center in Avalon, where your guide will provide an introduction and welcome before setting out together. Transportation to the Ben Weston Canyon Trail is included as part of the program.
If you’re traveling from the mainland, please note that Catalina Express boat fare is not included — reservations should be made as early as possible to secure your spot. We’ll return to Avalon by approximately 1:30 p.m.
What to Bring:
Pack a lunch and snacks, a reusable water bottle and plenty of sun protection. Wear layered clothing, long pants and sturdy hiking shoes suitable for rugged terrain.
