About the Speakers
Dr Agnès Callamard is recognised globally as a leading authority on governance, accountability, and international affairs. She has been Secretary General of Amnesty International since 2021, previously served as the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial executions, and was Director of Columbia University’s Global Freedom of Expression project. Her career spans decades of leadership in defending human rights worldwide.
In this public lecture, Dr Callamard will reflect on today’s global challenges and opportunities, exploring what it means to be human and how collective action can drive change. Samantha Hayes, a New Zealand journalist and newsreader best known as the co-anchor of Three’s flagship news programme Newshub Live at 6pm, will be the MC for the evening, offering local context and guiding the conversation.
This event, co-hosted by the Centre for Asia Pacific Refugee Studies (CAPRS) and the Global Studies Programme in the Faculty of Arts and Education at the University of Auckland, offers a unique opportunity to engage with global human rights discourse in Aotearoa New Zealand at a time when representation, civic freedoms, and the international rules-based order are being widely debated. It also aims to inspire the next generation of change-makers to connect with both local and global struggles for justice.
