Noken / Men: String Bags of the Muyu Tribe of Southern West Papua

Veronika Triariyani Kanem is a PhD candidate at the University of Auckland - Waipapa Taumata Rau and together with Lagi-Maama Academy & Consultancy have curated Noken / Men: String Bags of the Muyu Tribe of Southern West Papua. The exhibition is now showing at Tāmaki Pātaka Kōrero | Central City Library.

In this talk Veronika will be sharing on the noken, or men, an intricate weaving practice of the Muyu tribe from Southern West Papua, sharing her research on the socio-cultural significance of the noken/men among the Muyu people, her father's tribe. Veronika invites us on a journey of noken making that sheds a light on her home of West Papua and the effects of colonisation and deforestation.

Tāmaki untold: conversations celebrating the taonga, stories and creativity of Auckland. A curated monthly talk series held in the Whare Wānanga hosted by Research and Heritage Services, Auckland Libraries. Ticketholders are kindly asked to extend the courtesy of cancelling tickets if they are no longer able to attend, so tickets can be released to others.
