Join us for a journey along our local waterway, Waitītiko-Meola Creek from the summit of Ōwairaka-Mt Albert down to the hidden awa beyond Rocket Park.
Be immersed in pakiwaitara (Māori stories) about Tāmaki Makaurau-Auckland with Pita Turei. Learn about the channels, culverts, tributaries, and efforts to enhance native biodiversity with STEPS (St Lukes Environmental Protection Society).
Getting there: Catch bus to Mt Albert town centre or drive to the Ōwairaka car park, then walk up Summit Drive into the domain and walk up the stairs to the very top. Carpool may be available back to start from end point.
What to bring: Hat, water, walking shoes, cold/wet weather gear, sunscreen.
Pita Turei (Ngai Tai Ki Tamaki, Ngāti Pāoa, Ngā Rauru Kītahi) is an artist, local iwi advocate and respected storyteller dedicated to walking with people to reveal the hidden ancient histories of Tāmaki Makaurau.
STEPS (St Lukes Environmental Protection Society) is a volunteer organisation that aims to protect the Waitītiko-Meola Creek ecosystem and enhance its native biodiversity for the climate and our community, by connecting and empowering people, making Waitītiko-Meola Creek a thriving eco-corridor from Ōwairaka to the Waitematā.
