"Connected" by Mathias Wyatt Allemand

Mathias Wyatt Allemand is a French painter and illustrator, and a resident artist at The Button Factory for over a year. Raised in the peaceful countryside of southern France, he developed a lifelong connection to the natural world. After studying Fine Arts in Marseille and specializing in Illustration in Belgium—where he spent a decade refining his craft and creating murals for restaurants, private homes, and even Théâtre du Soleil in Paris—he lived in Berlin for five years before moving to New Zealand in 2022. There, he rediscovered the power and beauty of daily contact with nature.

Allemand’s work celebrates the harmony and richness of the natural world while highlighting the fragility of ecosystems under human pressure. His choice to paint on cardboard is both practical and symbolic—a commentary on a world of over-consumption, where endless packaging and shipping contribute to species loss and threaten the balance of life itself. Through his art, he challenges us to reflect on our place within the delicate web of life.
