When I speak with people lately it doesn’t take long before a spirit of anxiety reveals itself. Whether it is the cost of living or remaining healthy, or international challenges, or just questions about our values, it is hard to find peace.
That is the genesis behind Prayer for Peace, a weekly vigil we will hold at 5:30 PM on Thursdays at Bethlehem starting February 12 and running through the season of Lent. We want to bring together friends, neighbors, strangers, everyone who is feeling a lack of grounding together for 1/2 hour in our sanctuary.
This will evolve as it is intended to reflect the needs of those who gather, but it will give us a space where we can quiet our hearts, share in community, and even if we feel powerless, we can light a candle and pass the peace.
You might remember that in what was known as East Germany 35 years ago, people would meet in the Lutheran Churches to pray and light candles. Eventually it grew and grew until it brought about change we never imagined possible.
We believe peace begins with prayer, and that a spirit of peace can renew our world. We invite you, and we invite your friends and neighbors, to join us in this spiritual journey on Thursday evenings at Bethlehem starting February.
