Event Description
CERT Basic Training – Part 2 completes the FEMA-developed CERT Basic course and builds directly on Part 1. Attendance at both sessions is required for course completion.
Part 2 focuses on hands-on skills, realistic scenarios, and how trained citizens safely support their community during disasters—always operating within their capabilities and prioritizing personal safety.
Topics in Part 2 include:
• Disaster medical operations (Part II): airway management, patient movement, and triage practice
• Light search and rescue: damage assessment, safe lifting techniques, and victim removal
• Disaster psychology: understanding trauma in survivors and responders
• Terrorism and hazardous events: understanding CERT’s limited but vital role
• Team communication and coordination
• Final hands-on disaster simulation exercise
CERT training emphasizes that volunteers do not self-deploy, do not replace first responders, and only operate when appropriately activated.
Upon completion of both training days, participants receive a CERT Basic Training certificate and are eligible to apply for membership in the Tipton County CERT Team, with opportunities for continued training and service throughout the year.
Who should attend?
• Residents who want to be better prepared for emergencies
• Church, civic, and neighborhood leaders
• Volunteers interested in community service
• Anyone wanting practical, life-saving skills
CERT is about preparedness, teamwork, and neighbors helping neighbors—safely and effectively—when it matters most.
