As part of the 10th annual NORTH SHORE BIRDING FESTIVAL, on Saturday Dec. 13 there will be a Young Birders Big Day, Lake Apopka North Shore.
The cost will be $25 for youth & parents, which includes a box lunch. The leaders are Luis Gles, Will Johnson and Kathy Rigling
The Young Birders will be competing with the adult teams to see which team can observe the most species. Last year the Young Birders won by a wide margin!
Luis Gles is a well known international bird guide and Will Johnson is a well known Florida birder. We will carpool to drive to various locations on the North Shore of Lake Apopka and other nearby hotspots. We will be able to bird the Apopka Birding Park and also bird a newly opened sparrow field at the entrance of the drive. This trip will last from 7:00am -3:30 PM.
After the Big Day, Orange Audubon is also offering a new afternoon, early evening activity from 4:30-7:30 PM, called Young Birders Dinner & Owling Combo, at Wekiwa Springs State Park Youth Camp Dining Hall, 1800 Wekiwa Cir, Apopka, FL 32712. The cost is $20 for youth participants and parents which includes dinner with the keynote address. This is a special Young Birders discount; regular price is $35. Dinner is catered by Krazy Greek Kitchen, back by popular demand, and includes vegetarian options. The keynote is "Saving the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow" by Alex and Mary Marine, biologists at Archbold Biological Station.
After dinner we will do an owl quest on foot in the Youth Camp. Four species of owls are possible at the Youth Camp.
