In this fascinating Friday Night Talk, we will be exploring the different types of volcanism in the Monument, ranging from quiescent lava flows to violently erupted ash flow deposits typical of the Western Cascade Series. We will get to see the contrast between stratovolcanoes –like Mt. Shasta– and the dominant shield volcanoes of the Monument as well as faulting episodes throughout Monument geohistory.
The Hike & Learn will be led by the dynamic geologist, Jad D’Allura. Jad received his Ph.D. in geology from UC Davis. He worked for Texaco as an exploration geologist for two years then taught geology at SOU for 33 years prior to retirement. He continues to do basic geologic research with University of Oregon undergraduate seniors in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.
The Friday Hike and Learn sessions will take place in the Ashland Food Co-op Community Classroom at 300 N. Pioneer in Ashland from 6:00 to 7:30pm. The classroom is is one block toward downtown from the grocery store on N 1st Street. This Eventbrite is for the Friday Talk ONLY, register for Saturday hike HERE. Attendance to Friday Night Talks is limited to 40 people.
The Friends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is a nonprofit organization and our mission is to support the protection, restoration and conservation of the monument through service, advocacy and education. Our Hike and Learn program is designed to introduce the public to different topics and locations within the Monument. Hike and Learns are co-created with local scientists, historians, artists, students, and more.
