This Labor Day weekend, the Andes Society for History and Culture invites you to connect with the stories that shape our region’s history. Join us for two community events that honor resilience, memory, and heritage:
🎶 Songs of the Anti-Rent Movement Book Talk
📅 Saturday, August 30 @ 3 p.m.
📍 Hunting Tavern Museum, 288 Lower Main Street, Andes
Legend has it that the Anti-Rent movement was filled with song — but much of that music has been forgotten. In her new book, Dr. Nancy Newman (Professor of Music and Theatre, University at Albany–SUNY) reconstructs those songs, showing how music carried the hopes and struggles of the Anti-Renters. She’ll share her research along with a live tune demonstration.
💧 Reservoir Day – 70th Anniversary of the Flooded Communities
📅 Sunday, August 31
📍 Pleasant Valley Meeting House, County Route 1
🥗 Potluck luncheon @ 12:00 p.m.
🎥 Film screening (Beneath Pepacton Waters by Frank & Anne Marie Jacobson) @ 1:30 p.m.
This year we mark the 70th anniversary of the flooding of the East Branch River Valley, which erased the towns of Pepacton, Shavertown, Union Grove, and Arena. We’ll gather to remember, share food, and reflect on this history together.
✨ Both events are free and open to all. ✨
Come for one, or join us for both — your presence makes these stories come alive.
