Drawing upon his research project, "𝘙𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘷𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴, 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘴; 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘤 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤", Sam will present some methods for collective improvisation based upon the melodic language of traditional irish music that he has been developing as part of his research at KASK & Conservatorium in Gent.
Comerford has been searching for ways to improvise in a group based upon the melodies of Irish dance music; a tradition made up of melodies played together in unison for dancing, where the rhythm and harmony are contained within the melody. He will present some methods to collectively expand the forms of the music, and some harmonic techniques that allow for meaningful ways of moving through harmony in folk musics outside of the diatonic, modal or drone-based frameworks that are commonly used.
