Join us for an enchanting evening with Svaja Vansauskas, the visionary Curator of the Little Lithuanian Museum, as she shares the vibrant history and culture of Lithuania. Born in Lithuania and raised near Chicago, Svaja brings a wealth of knowledge from her academic background in literature and linguistics, having taught English literature and composition at four universities, including three in Anchorage, before retiring in 2004. A proud mother of seven, grandmother of 18, and great-grandmother to two (with another on the way!), Svaja’s passion for her heritage shines through in her work.
Nestled across the Baltic Sea from Norway and Sweden, Lithuania boasts a rich tapestry of Pagan and Christian traditions. Svaja will delve into the country’s storied past, including its strategic significance, once coveted by Russia, and its journey to international recognition. As Alaska’s Honorary Consul for the Republic of Lithuania, she has dedicated herself to preserving and sharing Lithuanian culture through the Little Lithuanian Museum, now in its fifth season as a museum, library, and art gallery.
Hear the remarkable story of Svaja’s grandfather, whose letters from exile in Russia she translated into English, offering a poignant glimpse into Lithuania’s history. Dressed in traditional Lithuanian attire, Svaja will bring her culture to life, sharing personal stories and insights into the museum’s treasures.
