Join us for Featured Firsts at Turnagain Ceramics! Each first Friday, we hold an opening reception for a different local ceramic artist, featuring a free community throw! Our front gallery has a treasure trove of pottery and ceramic art that our studio members lovingly handcraft. From plates, mugs, and bowls to jewelry and sculpture, our gallery has it all!
For the month of October, our gallery will feature Devry Birdsell and Alana Evans.
“Devry Birdsell grew up in Palmer and now resides in Anchorage. She is a UAA alumnus with a BA in Art with an emphasis in Handbuilt Ceramics and took up wheel-throwing while working on her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy. She is inspired by the simplicity of the world around her, incorporating themes of local nature, silliness, and a touch of cynicism into her dynamic body of work. She has been honing her pottery skills for the past three years, but maintains an essence of her handbuilt roots as evidenced in intricate, high-touch processes with near-obsessive attention to surface work details. Devry has been part of the Turnagain Ceramics community since November 2022.”
“Alana Evans is a long-time Alaskan who began their pottery journey 2 years ago right here at Turnagain Ceramics. They discovered ceramics after exploring various hobbies, eventually enrolling in pottery classes, where they quickly fell in love with the process.
Alana enjoys crafting pieces that are both beautiful and functional designed for comfort and everyday use. They draw inspiration from fellow ceramicists and embrace the continuous learning that pottery offers. Their hope is that these pieces bring others the same joy they’ve brought them.
You can usually find Alana in the studio, where they work as a Studio Tech while also developing their own artistic practice. When not covered in clay, they enjoy spending time outdoors and relaxing with their cat, Oscar.”
