Modern Dance and Contemporary Movement
✨A four week series with Lela✨
There is something magnetic about Modern dance. It’s grounded, expressive, rooted in the way the body naturally wants to move. This four week series is your chance to step into that world with a teacher who makes the technique feel approachable, playful, and deeply connected to your breath.
Each class blends elements of Bartenieff Fundamentals and Cunningham and Graham Technique. Think floor work that reconnects you to your body’s natural patterns, dynamic sequences that help you change direction and shift your center with confidence, and combinations that strengthen your core while opening up new pathways of movement.
You’ll explore suspension and release, fall and recovery, momentum, and the subtle art of letting breath guide your transitions. Expect a mix of structured combinations, improvisation, and plenty of encouragement to discover your own way of moving. It’s perfect for absolute beginners, returning dancers, and experienced movers who want time to reconnect with the foundations.

The Lineage Behind the Class
Bartenieff Fundamentals
Created by Irmgard Bartenieff, these principles follow the natural movement patterns we develop as children. Much of the work takes place on the floor so you can build awareness through the body’s relationship to gravity and the various planes of movement.
Cunningham Technique
Developed by Merce Cunningham, a pioneer of Postmodern Dance, this technique trains your ability to shift direction in both the body and in space. Cunningham believed dance and music could exist independently while still sharing the same moment, which created a style known for clarity, curiosity, and the unexpected. His “chance” methods taught dancers to adapt, strengthen, and stay mentally agile.
Together, these approaches create a class that is both structured and expressive, disciplined and freeing.
