Misdeeds and Mystery in a Small Town
1 Hour Historical Walking Tour
Windsor-Essex Jane's Walk Fundraiser
A photographer held captive by a gang of rumrunners, a case that led to the abolition of the death penalty in Michigan, and mysterious bodies washing up on shore, are among the headlines that pop up when researching the history of crime in this small town. There is no shortage of material in this regard, as Amherstburg has been host to much mischief since its inception in 1796. The newspapers often provided detailed accounts, allowing us to pass on the stories to you many years later. Though most cases have been solved, some are a mystery to this day.
As we walk through Amherstburg’s downtown, we will talk about several incidents of wrongdoing including both darker episodes and trivial transgressions. Come and learn about over 200 years of crime in a small town on the banks of the Detroit River.
Starting location:
Outside at 80 Richmond Street (The Marsh Historical Collection office).
About the host:
Meg Reiner is the Collections Coordinator at the Marsh Historical Collection, a local history centre focused on collecting, preserving and encouraging research into the heritage of Amherstburg and the lower Detroit River district.
