This approx 10 mile route offers a mixture of quiet country lane riding, bridleways offering grassland canter opportunities, and forest trails. Passing through the picturesque Alton village centre, as well as historic Great Gate, points of interest along the way include Alton Castle, Denstone College and the ruins of Croxden Abbey. Views are expansive in the staffordshire countryside with a great vantage point across to the Weaver Hills, and those interested in history might catch a glimpse of the old whipping post as we pass through Great Gate.
Worth noting:
Some roadwork is necessary, mainly on quiet lanes. The section passing through Alton may be busier with a potential to meet larger vehicles.
Livestock may be present both on, and alongside the route.
Cyclists and walkers with dogs or pushchairs may be encountered on sections of multi-user trail.
There are small water splashes along the route.
Portions of the route may be stony.
Going is not always level with some channelling to tracks at times.
Places are £40.50/horse and rider combination, which includes £2 parking donation to the village hall. Please use the 'find tickets' button to book. All riders must have adequate Public Liability Insurance to cover themselves and their horses. Under 18s are welcome but on a first visit must be accompanied on the ride by an adult.
