Prairie Lakes Audubon Chapter is celebrating their 11th anniversary as a chapter of the National Audubon Society. This meeting will feature presenter Jon Mobeck the Executive Director of the National Loon Center in Cross Lake, MN. He will present "The State of the State Bird: Loons, Lakes and Legacy." Jon will share stories and information about loons, their cultural relevance, and then will end with the significance and aspirations of the forthcoming National Loon Center.
Our state bird the Common Loon faces many challenges beyond migration including habitat loss and lead poisoning. Did you know that one in five loons die because of lead poising? The National Loon Center aims to restore and protect loon breeding habitats, enhance responsible recreation and serve as a national leader in advancing loon and freshwater research and education.
Jon will present on the work, goals, and mission of the loon center as well as share the updates from the recent groundbreaking on the new building. This new National Loon Center will be a national destination for nature-lovers and conservationists. They will educate thousands of visitors with immersive exhibits while coordinating continent-wide loon research. Please join us to learn more about loons, the research, and the National Loon Center.
There is no cost to attend this program, but local chapter membership renewals will be offered for the coming year at $20 per household to support PLACβs activities.
