Most Secret: The Story of Defford Airfield

A slightly early heads up that our new season starts 3 weeks today. On 18th Sept 2025 David Roberts will present a talk entitled:
‘Most Secret: The Story of Defford Airfield’.
This talk discusses the history of the airfield from the requisitioning of the land in 1940 up to the modern era. Following initial use as a satellite airfield to RAF Pershore in 1941/2 Defford became the home of the Telecommunications Flying Unit (TFU). Although well known for airborne radar development the TFU flew trials for all manner of airborne electronic equipment enjoying triumph as well as suffering tragedy. Following closure as an airfield Defford has seen many uses one of which is as a centre for radio astronomy.

The picture shows the Boeing247-D used to develop automatic landing systems during the second world war. The story of the airfield is fascinating and it should be a great lecture.

As usual, it starts at 19:00 in the Cold War Lecture Theatre, RAF Museum Midlands (Cosford). Parking after 18:00 is free, the lecture is free to RAeS members, Branch Friends (£10 sub due this month) and to all in full time education. We request a £2 donation from visitors.
