About the event

Reasons for Albany's Establishment and Closure - 1826 to 1831
The British settlement of King George’s Sound is unique amongst Western Australia and Australian European history. One of eight expensive to maintain outposts established from New South Wales between 1803 and 1929, its purpose has been debated for many years. In this talk, Shane Burke examines primary sources indicating some clarity in the place’s function in the scheme of British imperialism over all the Australian continent. He also discusses that King George’s Sound technically suffered the same fate as most other New South Wales operated outposts.
