Beneath Ancient Skies

Step into the world of archaeoastronomy as we present the short film BENEATH ANCIENT SKIES. This 15-minute video explores the celestial alignments and mysteries of the Great Kiva at Creekside Village, plus other archaeological sites in our region connected to the stars celestial bodies. Previously shown only once (at the New Mexico Space History Museum as a follow-up to the Jornada Research Institute’s archaeoastronomy conference), this is a unique opportunity to see this fascinating film with the local community.

After the screening, we’ll discuss how more and more archaeological sites with astronomical associations are being recognized in our area. You’ll also get a brief look at ongoing research into the region’s first documented ancient astronomical observatories—Wizard’s Roost and Wally’s Dome—originally reported by Peter Eidenbach and Mark Wimberly in the late 1970s and early 1980s. We gratefully acknowledge the US Forest Service (Lincoln National Forest) and the Mescalero Apache Tribe for supporting continued study at these significant sites.

Stick around after the presentation for refreshments as we mark over 50 years of archaeological contributions by the event’s presenter and celebrate 75 years of a life dedicated to discovery.
