This year, the University of Florida hired Charlie Muise to kickstart the new University of Florida Bird Observatory (UFBO). The goals of the observatory are to train graduate and undergraduate students, assist with permitting and logistics of various projects, conduct public outreach and education, and collect samples for multiple investigators, all while conducting statistically valid research into bird populations.
Join Charlie and his banding team at the newly added Hague Dairy banding location (13200 NW 59th Dr, Gainesville).
• Arrival: Please plan to arrive between 7:00–7:15 a.m. so you can be at the banding area by 7:30 a.m. This gives you a great chance to see birds up close as they return from the nets.
Parking & Directions:
• Park in the main grass lot to the left of the sign with the cow.
• From there, walk along the road to the right of the sign, then take the first right toward the long metal building across from the retention pond.
• The team will be set up under two white canopies in the small field between the road and the building.
• Tip: If you reach the silos, you’ve gone too far.
• For those with mobility concerns, you may park closer to the metal building and field.
If we have a large turnout, we can split into two groups. One group will remain at the banding station, while the other takes a walk around Hague Dairy in search of passerines and other seasonal species. The groups will then switch.
Difficulty:
Banding area - 1
Bird walk areas - 2 - Uneven ground
