Appropriately to Akron there will be a brief discussion on why Akron evolved as the tire making hub, and the evolution from cotton and hard rubber tires to pneumatic inner tube filled, then tubeless and rayon, nylon, then polyester, body plied and fiberglass and aramid and finally steel belted radials that have nylon circumferential overlays for further endurance.
Why people pay more for tennis shoes, while complex engineered and chemically compounded tires carry tons at high speed and are soft, quiet and handles well will be discussed. Some helpful surprises like every passenger tire you buy has a grade for tread wear, wet traction and resistance to heat buildup and separations, yet few know about this. And remember the tires does not carry the load, air does! Thus the joke in the industry tires are just ”round and black” while making them round is one of the most difficult thing in the tire process! Gary has a Bachelor of Science from West Point, an Executive MBA from Kent State and has worked in tire design and process engineering, both Domestic and International for 56 years.
