Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch
12:00 noon
Priscilla Erickson, RAS Trip Leader
September 20 Rock Fish Gap Hawk Watch. 12:00–3:00 pm. Join the fabulous Priscilla Erickson for an outing to the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch to see up to 15 species of southbound migrating raptors. For carpooling, meet at 11:00 am at Hickory Haven Park and Ride, just west of Short Pump off I-64. If you would rather meet at the hawk watch, meet Priscilla around noon at the Inn at Afton for the hawk watch where expert volunteers will help ID raptors. The third week of September usually has large numbers of Broad-winged Hawks, with up to thousands per day! This is a beginner friendly trip. Feel free to join for any part of the day. Bring optics, snacks, water, and sun protection; a portable restroom is available.
Rain date will be Sunday, September 21st.
Note that the site is open to the public everyday August 15–November 30, so you are welcome to go another time if you can’t make this trip. There is also great birding along the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway if you’d like to make a day of it.
