Also known as Rudabai Stepwell, Adalaj Stepwell is located in the small town of Adalaj near Gandhinagar. It was built in the 15th century (1499 AD to be exact) when the purpose of building stepwells was to collect and preserve rainwater for drinking, washing, and bathing. You'll find many such stepwells in the Western region of India. A little trivia for you - in the Gujarati and Marwari languages, stepwells are called vav, while in other Hindi-speaking North Indian regions, they are called baoli or bavadi!
