Emmy-award winner Matthew Rhys returns to the Welsh stage for the first time in over 20 years to perform Playing Burton: a one-man play charting Richard Burton’s life from his humble beginnings to the dazzling heights of Hollywood.
Exploring the struggle to balance fame, ambition, romance and identity, Playing Burton is written by Mark Jenkins and directed by Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sher.
Matthew Rhys said: “The reason I wanted to act was because of Richard Burton. Since first seeing his incredible performance in Look Back in Anger to still listening to his audio of Hamlet and Under Milk Wood. He blazed the trail for us all and showed us it was possible.”
The production is fundraising for Welsh National Theatre, welcoming theatre-goers to experience an incredible performance by one world-class actor, in homage to another.

Mae enillydd gwobr Emmy, Matthew Rhys, yn dychwelyd i lwyfan Cymru am y tro cyntaf ers dros 20 mlynedd i berfformio Playing Burton: drama un dyn sy'n olrhain bywyd Richard Burton o'i ddechreuadau gostyngedig i uchelfannau disglair Hollywood.
Gan archwilio'r frwydr i gydbwyso enwogrwydd, uchelgais, rhamant a hunaniaeth, mae Playing Burton wedi'i ysgrifennu gan Mark Jenkins a'i gyfarwyddo gan enillydd Gwobr Tony, Bartlett Sher.
Dywedodd Matthew Rhys: “Y rheswm pam roeddwn i eisiau actio oedd oherwydd Richard Burton. Ers gweld ei berfformiad anhygoel yn Look Back in Anger am y tro cyntaf i wrando o hyd ar ei sain o Hamlet ac Under Milk Wood. Torrodd y llwybr i ni i gyd a dangos i ni ei bod hi'n bosibl.”
Mae'r cynhyrchiad yn codi arian ar gyfer National Theatre Wales, gan groesawu mynychwyr theatr i brofi perfformiad anhygoel gan un actor o'r radd flaenaf, mewn teyrnged i un arall.
