Da Simon var 18 år gamle, meldte han sig til den danske værnepligt. Han valgte Bornholm, som er en opklaringsbataljon. Han forsatte på Bornholm som konstabel, med henblik på udsendelse til Afghanistan på hold 15.

Simon kom aldrig til Afghanistan. 6 måneder senere stod han i syd Frankrig, med en taske og 200 kr. i lomme. Det var starten på 5 år i den franske fremmedlegion (2013).
