This event is an introductory meeting where you can come and meet Aros Historical Fencing Guild, hear more about what we do and discover more about Historical Fencing – yes, we play with swords!
WHAT IS HEMA?
Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) is a collection of martial art systems of European origin, mostly involving the use of historical weapons from European history, described in combat manuals -or treaties- written by the old masters. HEMA is about reviving these lost martial arts using historical material combined with contemporary training methods and safe modern protective gear – and yes, we play with swords!
WHAT IS AHFG?
Aros Historical Fencing Guild is a HEMA club located in Aarhus and is part of the Danish Fencing Federation, which sorts under the Danish Sporting Union (DIF).
The club focuses mainly on German Longsword fencing as per Johannes Liechtenauer with extra activities such as Italian Rapier from Salvator Fabris and many other weapon systems from the historical treaties.
We meet weekly on Mondays and Thursdays from 1900 to 2200 to have fun and get better at the sport. Regular classes are given by HEMA medalists and former Danish National Champion instructors from the Club, but our guild also works a study group where all members share their knowledge and are passionate about teaching each other about the sport.
HEMA is a physical martial art where we try to hit each other with blunt metal fencing safe weapons. Safety and sportsmanship are the most important rules and all members are required to be ready to both give and receive hits. Which is a lot of fun, after all – yes, we play with swords!
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO TRY HEMA WITH AROS HFG?
This event is meant as a show and tell of what the club does, you will see us explain our sport and give short displays of the different styles we do and will be able to handle our equipment and fencing gear to see if you like what we do.
WHAT GEAR DO YOU NEED TO TRAIN WITH AHFG?
The style of fencing we practice at the Aros Historical Fencing Guild is called Blossfechten and is designed to resemble fencing in civilian attire and without armour so we train in normal modern sport clothes and indoor sneakers.
To fence against one another, fencers must use approved weapons and wear an array of protective equipment (for example: fencing mask, gloves and padded jackets). This is designed to keep the sport safe and fun.
The club has full sets of weapons and protective gear that members can borrow until they have acquired their own, which is recommended.
