Nyungne is a profound three-day practice that easily accommodates people whose schedules do not permit a long-term retreat. Nyungne participants keep strict vows, including complete silence and fasting. Participants find the practice very helpful for physical and spiritual purification.
The retreat focuses on reciting prayers and mantras and guided visualization of the Thousand-Armed Chenrezig, the embodiment of all the Buddhas' loving-kindness and compassion. Translated as 'abiding in the fast,' Nyungne is known to heal illness, nurture compassion, and purify negative karma. A single Nyungne or 'abiding in retreat' for three days can be an effective purification practice lasting three months. According to Lama Yeshe, this is an ideal practice for Westerners, and, indeed, it is very popular in the West because of its instant results!
This three-day Nyungne retreat will occur in the beautiful Karma Shedrup Ling retreat center located in the forest on the outskirts of Oslo. On Saturday, participants will enjoy a light breakfast, after which we will fast until Monday morning. The retreat will be completely silent on Sunday. On Monday morning, we will break the fast together, and the retreat will conclude at 10:00 a.m.
A minimum of eight participants are required for KTLBS to offer the Nyungne retreat. Retreat teachings will be in English, some of the practice rounds will be chanted in Norwegian.
Lama Changchub will guide the Nyungne Retreat. Before arriving in Norway in 1992, Lama Changchub completed a traditional three-year retreat (lama education) between 1988 and 1991 under his root lama, Kalu Rinpoche. He has been the main lama at KTLBS since 1994. At KTLBS, Lama Changchub has devotedly taught and guided us in Buddhism. He teaches in English.
