Since 1810

Why it is called Oktoberfest when it happens in September

A horse race on a Munich meadow in 1810, watched by a royal couple and a cheering crowd

The short version: a wedding, a horse race and a decision about the weather. Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese married in October 1810, and Munich celebrated on the meadow now called the Theresienwiese. The festival returned every year after, and was moved forward into September because late-September weather in Bavaria is far more reliable than October's.

Munich's 2026 Wiesn is on now: day 11 of 16, until October 4.

A Bavarian folk festival that began in Munich as a royal wedding party: Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese on 12 October 1810, and the celebrations ended with a horse race on 17 October.
