Thousands of dogs are euthanized each year in Collier County with no end in sight. The most effective and humane way of addressing the pet overpopulation crisis is through community spay/neuter programs combined with public awareness. In 2013 Domestic Animal Services was forced to euthanize 1,138 dogs, many of which would have been otherwise considered fully adoptable. These are not feral, ill or dangerous creatures but possible life companions who ran out of space and time. Providing spay and neuter services to those who would otherwise be unable or unwilling to sterilize their companion animals has an immense impact on the number of unwanted or abandoned dogs.
