A discussion on the book

HEART LAMP

Neha Shah in dialogue with Saroop Dhruv Pratibha Thakkar and Zakia Soman

Heart Lamp A compilation of 12 short stories by Banu Mushtaq became the first Kannada work and the first short story collection to win the 2025 International Booker Prize. The stories portray the experiences of Muslim women in southern India addressing patriarchy gender discrimination faith societal expectations and resilience. Rooted in the Bandaya Sahitya movement—a Kannada literary tradition that challenges caste class and religious injustices—the collection offers sharp social critique.

The selected stories were curated by translator Deepa Bhasthi from Mushtaq’s six Kannada story collections published between 1990 and 2023. Bhasthi’s translation brings Mushtaq’s voice and narratives to a global readership.

Come together to celebrate the recognition of an Indian writer giving voice to marginalised experiences while engaging in a critical discussion on the pressing issues the book raises.
