Monthly ramble 19th August 2025

From Tony:
As it's the summer, we'll try to have a rather longer outing in August. I've been looking at going to Fingle Bridge, on the river Teign at the edge of Dartmoor (thank you Peter for the suggestion). The walk itself is not especially long, about 4 miles, but through lovely scenery above the river, then back again along the river bank.

The date would be Tuesday 19 August, meeting at 10am at Magelake. We would try to share cars as much as possible, with the journey taking about 45 minutes.

There is an initial climb of about 450 feet, but thereafter the walk is basically downhill or level, with one or two fluctuations and a total ascent of about 650 feet (slightly less than last year's summer walk between the two stations on the Tarka Line). There would be a possibility of having a coffee etc at the Castle Drogo National Trust cafe on the way round, and then something to eat/drink at the Fingle Bridge Inn at the end of the walk (unfortunately, it looks as if the pub closes at 5pm on Tuesdays, with last orders for most food at 3pm, but cream teas - £8.50, or no doubt a tea and cake alternative - should be available until half an hour before closing time).
