There will be a VJ Day Commemoration at #longshopmuseum on Saturday 16th August from around 10:30am to 11:30am. There will be a memorial service, and wreaths will be laid beneath the Union Flag memorial.
The 4th and 5th Battalions the Suffolk Regiment were in the Battle of Singapore and subsequently spent time in captivity in the Chung Kai PoW camp in Thailand, famed for its connection to the Burma Railway.
The dedication on the flag reads -
"A moth-eaten rag on a worm-eaten pole. It does not look likely to stir a man's soul. 'Tis the deeds that were done 'neath the moth-eaten rag, when the pole was a staff and the rag was a flag."
Throughout their captivity the flag occupied the place of honour over the Altar in the little bamboo Church. When a man of the Bn. died, the flag was used at the Burial Service. On the capitulation of the Japanese (16th Aug. 1945), the flag was hoisted to the top of the pole in the Camp, by the men of the Bn. who had survived the three years of captivity. This flag was mounted, framed and erected by public subscription, and is displayed here at the Long Shop as a Memorial to the members of the Suffolk Regiment.
