Clay and Pottery Workshops - Presence in Absence

Servants would have been the backbone of the running of a large house. Yet they, and their work, may have rarely been seen by the guests and inhabitants. Both in written records, and in the house itself, they left scant trace of themselves. This series of clay workshops seeks to restore their presence in the house, remember their names and honour their contribution to the history of the building.
Together we will look at the house through the eyes of servants, and handle some of the objects they used daily to get a feel for their work. Each week we will learn and build on skills working with clay and make sculptural objects which will be exhibited in the museum alongside the collections. Guided by Kath McDonald from King Street Arts, you will learn some basic sculpting and slab working techniques.
No experience needed, and all materials will be provided. Adults only but all abilities very welcome.
Please see museum access statement for access information. Local artist, Kath McDonald, has been working with clay for 20 years and is interested in clay and how it can express the human condition.
Please note this a series of three workshops and participants are encouraged to attend all three sessions, 12.30- 3.30pm on Sunday 21st, 28th September and 12th October.
