Activist artist Steve Denton was born in Detroit. After graduating from high school, he moved to Bristol, Tenn., and attended King College. At school, he discovered theater and began acting in plays and doing improv comedy. After a heart attack at age 42 forced him to retire from performance arts, Steve took up 2- and 3-dimensional art in earnest. His modern folk-style work runs the gamut from whimsical abstracts to heavy political commentary, using acrylic paints and collage techniques to get his message out. Steve calls this exhibition at Atelier 133 "Watch Your Step," after an Elvis Costello song, stating Costello has been prescient politically and a hero of the resistance.
