“Community Through Clay” is a group exhibition by Twenty Dirty Hands, a collective of ceramic artists from the Tri-state region bound together by a shared passion for working in clay, the power of collaboration, and a love for life along the Mississippi River. This exhibition, hosted at the Smokestack from August 1-29, showcases the diverse and dynamic ceramic works created by the group’s 13 member artists, highlighting the group's ongoing commitment to creative exploration, mutual support, and artistic growth.
Founded on collective experiences of working together, exchanging ideas, and nurturing friendships, Twenty Dirty Hands is known for its annual pottery tour. The group makes ongoing contributions to the region's arts community. The pieces on display reflect the individual styles and technical expertise of each member, ranging from functional pottery intended for everyday use to intricate decorative vessels and compelling sculptural forms. Member artists have also taken this opportunity to share non-clay works that fuel and inspire their studio practice.
Current member artists include Ken Bichell, Jenni Petersen-Brant, Gary Carstens, Paul Eshelman, Ron Hahlen, Kent Henderson, Tab Link, Stephanie O'Shaughnessy, John Richard, Liz Robertson, Rich Robertson, Scott Steder, and Elizabeth Boggess.
In addition to this exhibition, Twenty Dirty Hands will host its renowned 24th annual self-guided pottery tour this fall, scheduled for October 17-19, 2025. For more information on participating artists and locations, visit twentydirtyhands.com.
