Get to know the people behind the scenes at The Rooms! Each Wednesday this summer, we're shining a spotlight on special collections we care for and the staff who work with them.

From archaeology and archives to natural history and conservation, you'll hear firsthand stories about what it's like to work with Newfoundland and Labrador’s most fascinating collections.

Each week features a new topic and a new face—come with questions and curiosity!

Summer Schedule:

July 23 – Lori Temple: What should you do if you find an artifact while walking on the beach or digging in your backyard? Lori Temple will share how The Rooms and the Provincial Archaeology Office handle public artifact identifications, along with a display of objects found outside traditional archaeological contexts.

August 6 - Joan Mowbray: View the good, the bad, and the cursive in our government records collection. Joan Mowbray will showcase a selection of historical documents that highlight the range of handwriting found in our collections.

August 13 – Elayne Greeley: Pin sticking is the craft of decorating fabric pillows with pins to commemorate special occasions. Popular during the First World War, these ‘sweetheart pillows’ hold deep personal meaning. Visit Elayne Greeley to view a historic example by Private James Vardy and try your hand at creating a contemporary pin pillow.

August 20 – Elizabeth Fewer: View a unique collection of intricately embroidered silk postcards from the First World War, held in The Rooms. Elizabeth Fewer will showcase these postcards and share the stories behind who sent and received them.

August 27 – Nathalie Djan-Chekar: Meet Nathalie Djan-Chékar, Amanda Stewart and Morgan Glofcheskie to talk about our natural history collections. See specimens up close and discover the preparation methods used to build a long-term record of our province’s biodiversity.
