What makes some sounds feel like music, and others like noise? Why do certain notes and rhythms feel satisfying, while others feel tense or confusing? In this interactive talk, we’ll explore how physics and mathematics shape our experience of music. From the structure of the major scale to the hidden world of frequency ratios, we’ll uncover why we find beauty in harmony. Along the way, live demonstrations will reveal the connection between rhythm and pitch, and how our perception is tuned to recognize patterns and seek resolution. Finally, we'll visit the world of periodic mathematical functions and use them to define tonal and atonal sounds.

About the speaker: Mr. Jay Deshmukh is a Research Scholar at the Dept. of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science, TIFR. His research interests include Quantum Computing and Low Temperature Physics. He is also interested in music and science communcation.
