Anthony Bennett: STILLEBEN

STILLEBEN

The present body of Anthony Bennett’s work consists partly of a re-interpretation of the Still Life genre, as well as some smaller landscape paintings. The texture and fluidity of oil paint fascinates many artists and Anthony is no exception (he sometimes uses his hands instead of brushes). It might take months of reworking, but in the end the ‘finished’ painting, despite all this, must stand by itself.

“…Bonnard’s last completed painting was ‘Almond tree in blossom’. He had barely signed the picture when he died. On the day of his funeral, 23rd January 1947, snow fell on the pinkish brightness of the almond, as it did on the yellow brightness of the mimosa. Quite obviously, Nature was bidding farewell not to a groveling servant but to a passionate love. What, out of interest, did Nature do for Picasso when he died?…”
