🌿 Community Planting Day – Ōtanerua Reserve

📅 Saturday 10 August | 🕙 10am–1pm
📍 Meet at the reserve entrance, 19–21 Ōtanerua Road

Ōtanerua Reserve is a hidden gem – a beautiful area of native bush, rich in birdlife and home to an amazing variety of native plants. With a stream along the boundary and classified as a Significant Ecological Area, it’s a special place well worth protecting.

Since 2021, Restore Hibiscus & Bays has been supporting a dedicated local community group who’ve made great progress tackling invasive weeds like climbing asparagus, jasmine, Japanese honeysuckle, monkey apple, and massive wattle trees.

Over the past two years, hundreds of native trees and grasses have been planted to restore habitat, extend the bush, and stabilise the stream banks — and the work continues!

This year, we’ll be planting 900 native plants into the estuarine zone to improve habitat and water quality. This planting area was a forest of canna lily and plectranthus, now cleared and ready for planting.

👣 Come along for a few hours of meaningful work in a stunning spot — it’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors, connect with others, and make a real difference for our environment. You’ll be most welcome!

🧤 What to bring/wear:

Gardening gloves
Water bottle & snacks
Dress for the weather - warm layers
Sturdy shoes or gumboots (recommended for wetland planting)
A CLEAN spade if you have one

🌿 Supported by Auckland Council Healthy Waters, WaiCare, and Conservation Volunteers NZ.
