Back to the Basics: A Day at an Old-Time Country School
Step into the past and experience a day in an old-time country school! This month’s Boone Youth Explorers invites kids and families to discover what school was like in the early days. Held throughout the museum, this interactive program recreates the feel of a one-room schoolhouse. Children will learn lessons on slate boards, play classic games, paint with watercolors, and follow a few surprise “rules” from yesteryear—offering a hands-on glimpse into the history of education.
Creative Activities Include:
-Painting with watercolors using natural pigments inspired by native plants
-Practicing cursive with calligraphy-style quills and ink
-Making mini hornbooks like those used in early American classrooms
Formerly known as our Free Family Event series, Boone Youth Explorers is our newly renamed monthly program designed to spark curiosity and connect kids with local history through hands-on experiences.
Thanks to generous support from Missouri Humanities, we’ve been able to expand this program and offer even more engaging activities that bring the past to life for young minds.
