A play about revolutionary anti-colonial struggle in British Ruled India.

Udham Singh (born Sher Singh; 26 December 1899 – 31 July 1940) was an Indian revolutionary belonging to the Ghadar Party. He sought revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre that took place on 13 April 1919. The British Army opened fire on over 1500 people gathered there (exit was blocked by the army and those trying to flee were also shot at). It was a protest in Punjab during the annual Baisakhi fair against the arrest of pro-Indian independence activists.

Udham Singh, who was the survivor of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and in retaliation of the massacre of up to 1500 people, assassinated Michael O'Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of the Punjab in India and responsible for ordering to shoot at the crowd. Singh was tried and incarcerated. While in jail he used the name 'Ram Mohammad Singh Azad', which represents Hindu, Muslim, Sikh names - the three major religions in India - and his anti-colonial revolutionary desire of being free - Azad.

He was sentenced to death and hanged in prison. During his trial, he said:

"I did it because I had a grudge against him. He deserved it. He was the real culprit. He wanted to crush the spirit of my people, so I have crushed him. For full 21 years, I have been trying to seek vengeance. I am happy that I have done the job. I am not scared of death. I am dying for my country. I have seen my people starving in India under the British rule. I have protested against this, it was my duty"[1]

A bit about the making of the play: "With a collective of 20 migrant artists—including workers, students, and retired individuals, together, we formed a group called the Centre for Performing Arts in Montreal and have been actively involved in various cultural activities across the city.

With this play, we have taken a bold step toward staging a revolutionary performance that highlights themes of freedom, justice, truth, and social rights.

The show runs for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, featuring dialogues, Bhangra, and other dance performances. "
