Neon Dreams: BADLANDS (1974)

Suppose I shot you. How’d that be?”
It’s Malick Summer at The Revue, and Neon Dreams is thrilled to kick things off with Badlands—Terrence Malick’s debut film and sole foray into the neo-noir crime genre. Poetic, romantic, haunting, and thoroughly unpredictable, Badlands is a sweaty, sun-kissed tale of psychotic love that invites comparisons to Bonnie & Clyde and Natural Born Killers, yet remains firmly rooted in the 1970s New Hollywood scene.
Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen star as young lovers on the run following a vicious killing spree, fleeing rural South Dakota in a desperate attempt to cross into Canada before the law catches up with them. With stunning production design by Jack Fisk and cinematography by Tak Fujimoto (also his debut), Badlands established a unique visual language that would go on to define Malick’s style for decades to come.
We recommend following up Badlands with Alicia Fletcher’s series TERRENCE MALICK: PARADISE LOST, screening Sundays in August at the Revue Cinema.
This screening and others are made possible thanks to our wonderful sponsor Hollywood Suite.
