55th Anniversary Screening!

Don’t Be So Political is a monthly film series that engages with films through a political lens. Each screening is preceded by an expert Q&A. Hosted by Zach Wortzman

“Repression is our vaccine.”

A respected police inspector murders his mistress and works to disprove any theory that doesn’t point to his guilt in order to prove that he is indeed a citizen above suspicion.

Ushered by a suspense filled score by Maestro Ennis Morricone, Elio Petri directs the stylish and substantive crown jewel of his political dramas. Gian Maria Volonté blusters as Il Dottore, a sociopathic Mussolini inspired police inspector seduced by his own increasing power. Released 25 years after the fall of fascism in Italy, Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion presented a Kafkaesque parable about the bounds of authority and the creeping resurrection of fascism.

Winner of the Cannes Grand Jury Prize and Academy Award for Best Foreign Picture, Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion remains as relevant today as the day it was released. Rarely screened, the film represents a nation reckoning with its past and the still present fight to continue to evolve into a free democracy. A crushing rebuke of police power, Petri demands a total overhaul of authority and its sources of power.
