The Royal We began informally playing the late night set at the Royal Room in Seattle every Wednesday night. The music is highly improvised, working from motifs and compositions by Wayne Horvitz, with an emphasis on grooves influenced by African pop music, 60’s modal jazz and open improvisations. The music ranges from almost experimental to almost folkish, but with a singular sound. Over the years members have included Alex Guy, Ivan Galvez, Hans Teuber, Evan Flory-Barnes, Keith Lowe, Andy Roth, Tim Young, and Thione Diop.
Wayne Horvitz is a composer, pianist, and electronic musicians. He is the 2016 recipient of the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, the NEA American Masterpieces Award and three MAP Fund awards. He has been commissioned by the Kronos Quartet, The icicle Creek Trio, The Seattle Symphony, BAM, and The Kitchen among others. He is collaborated with, among others, Bill Frisell, Robin Holcomb, Gus Van Sant, John Zorn, and Butch Morris. He appears on over 300 CDs, over 30 as a leader.
Skerik is a saxophonist and electronic performer with numerous projects and extensive experience as a much in demand sideman. His current projects include Bandalabra, Omaha Diner (w/Steve Bernstein Charlie Hunter and Bobby Previte) and “Medeski, Skerik and Deitch” (Darkwave). He has performed and recorded with, among others, Stewart Copeland, Les Claypool, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Galactic, Ivan Neville, and Fred Wesley.
With a rich background in jazz and a joyful enthusiasm for blues and psychedelic rock, Andy Coe is recognized as a deeply intuitive, emotive guitarist. As an architect of sound and style, Coe draws in listeners, making collective exploration and resolution accessible across genres. Andy has performed in many bands including Andy Coe Band, Rashied Ali Quintet, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, Skerik Band, Bandalabra, Clinton Fearon, McTuff and many more.
Winner of the 2013, 2018 and 2021 “NW Instrumentalist of the Year” honors in the Seattle Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Awards, D’Vonne Lewis is the grandson of the ‘Godfather’ of rock and roll/soul, 1950s-1960s Northwest organ legend, Dave Lewis. D'Vonne Lewis graduated with honors from Seattle’s Roosevelt High School in 2002 and was a member of the award-winning jazz band, directed by SRJO trombonist, Scott Brown. While in high school, D’Vonne received the Essentially Ellington Drum soloist award for the years 2000, 2001 and 2002. Lewis resides in Seattle, WA, and extensively tours and performs various gigs in styles ranging from jazz, big band, funk, hip-hop, rock, Brazilian and African.
Geoff Harper (bass) is the co-founder of Bebop and Destruction, and has played with Herby Hancock, Julian Preister Band, Real Harper Brothers, Wayne Horvitz, Stone Gossard, Harrybu McCage (with Ryan burns & Matt Cameron), Tom Scott, Jay Roulston Band, Marriot Jazz Quintet, Thomas Marriot Willy Nelson Project, and Dave Marriot Jr: Triskaideka Band, among others.
