The keynote speaker of this year’s UCSIA Summer School public event is Yasmin Moll (University of Michigan). She will present her new book, 'The Revolution Within', exploring Egypt’s “New Preachers” — charismatic religious media figures who, in the lead-up to the Arab Spring, captivated millions of young viewers with a new kind of Islamic piety blending melodrama, music and self-help. Moll reveals how their media revolution reshaped not only religious expression but also the social and political fabric of Egypt.

Yasmin Moll is an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Dr Moll is a socio-cultural anthropologist and her research focuses on the intersection of religion, media and politics, as well as racial issues, indigenisation and heritage activism in the Middle East and North Africa.

This lecture is part of the UCSIA Summer School 2025, which investigates how moral debates and value conflicts shape the intersection of religion and politics, and how these tensions from below can drive societal and political change.
