House • Screening on 35mm

Nobuhiko Obayashi’s best-known film internationally is this bonkers haunted house tale based on the fantasies and fears of his pre-teen daughter. A gaggle of teenage friends go on an innocent trip to a country house only to discover it populated by all manner of evil spirits… and one particularly bloodthirsty piano. Weird, wild, and uncategorizable, HAUSU is a justifiably revered cult classic and hopefully a gateway to further encounters with Obayashi’s distinctly bent sense of cinema.

Fri, Jun 27 – Mon, Jun 30

Pioneering Japanese director Nobuhiko Obayashi is best known internationally for his 1977 horror-comedy HOUSE, which gained cult status following its 2007 re-release. In this series, we’ll screen HOUSE alongside a handful of Obayashi’s works from the early ‘80s, when he crafted surreal, emotionally rich films blending youthful nostalgia with the fantasy and experimental visuals of HOUSE. Join us June 27–30 for five films by Japan's Pop Art Renegade: Nobuhiko Ôbayashi.
