Shades of Red

An original one-woman show created, written, and performed by Chattanooga native Wendy Pursley, Shades of Red is a vibrant theatrical experience that has been delighting audiences for over 25 years. The show originated from a simple yet inspiring suggestion by Wendy’s mother—to bring to life the fascinating characters Wendy imagined, and share their stories on stage.
Over the years, Shades of Red has evolved, featuring a rotating cast of memorable women from a variety of backgrounds and personalities. The original lineup included six distinct characters, beginning with Big Bette, a bold and talented Country and Western musical sensation who kicks off the show with sass and soul. Other early characters included Martha Crouch, a retired Southern Belle with a sharp wit; Brittany Scoggins, the lively North Georgia Rodeo Round-Up Queen; Dr. Yolanda Greenwood, an expert on relationships with plenty of advice to offer; and the show’s closing act, Madame Irene, a know-it-all psychic and clairvoyant with a flair for the dramatic.
While some characters have come and gone, the show’s “big three” remain audience favorites: Big Bette, Martha Crouch, and Madame Irene. These vivid personalities, portrayed with humor, heart, and honesty, bring laughter and reflection as they navigate themes of love, life, and identity through their distinct voices.
Shades of Red is more than a series of monologues; it’s a celebration of the diverse experiences of women, each shade representing a different facet of life. Whether you’re drawn to the music, the storytelling, or the sharp social commentary woven throughout, this show promises an evening of engaging entertainment that resonates with audiences of all backgrounds.
