[find us: Look for a black yoga ball on the table. City Cross is quiet at 6:30 pm on Frudays - good for talking]

Talking Points

1. Some people might consider you or me "not quite respectable". What could cause them to decide that?

2. Think of some individuals whom you yourself might feel "not quite respectable" (though they might be sort of interesting). Tell us about them. Try to think of real people.

3. What is an activity which is not quite respectable (though a lot of people might do it). What might make it taboo?

4. Are you a snob? [Everyone always denies they are a snob, but then you see them making judgements about other people :) . To be a snob means that you think some other people, or dress style, or activity etc is below your dignity]

5. The use of names and titles varies across cultures. If you make a mistake with these it might offend the other person's dignity. How does the use of titles differ in Australia from your home country? Do you know the rules in Australia?

6. What are some status markers in Adelaide?

7. What are some differences between different countries & cultures when it comes to being respectable?

8. Think about how different age groups have different ideas about what is respectable.

9. From what you know about history, compare what people in, say, 1825 would think was respectable. What would they think of today's public behavior?

10. A lot of what we think is funny comes from breaking "respectable" rules. think of some examples.
